Raising Chickens for Fresh Eggs

Chickens are one of the easiest and most rewarding animals to raise on a homestead. They provide fresh eggs, natural pest control, and even fertilizer for your garden.

Choosing Your Chickens

For beginners, hardy and friendly breeds like Rhode Island Reds, Buff Orpingtons, or Barred Rocks are great choices. A small flock of 4–6 hens can provide a steady supply of eggs for a family.

Housing

Chickens need a secure coop to protect them from predators and the weather. Each bird should have at least 2–3 square feet inside the coop and a safe outdoor run to scratch and forage.

Feeding

Layer feed, grit, and fresh water are essentials. You can supplement with kitchen scraps (avoid salty or spoiled foods). Chickens also love greens, weeds, and bugs.

Egg Collection

Collect eggs daily to keep them clean and encourage your hens to keep laying. Fresh eggs will last weeks unwashed at room temperature, or longer if refrigerated.

Benefits Beyond Eggs

Chickens eat insects and weeds, helping your yard or garden. Their manure can be composted into a nutrient-rich fertilizer, completing a natural cycle of sustainability.
